Polity and Governance

1. CCTVs at all police stations, Commands SC

The Supreme Court ordered the government to install CCTV cameras at all the central investigation offices. This includes all the police stations, CBI, NIA, ED, NCB offices. The aim is to keep a virtual record of all the activities inside the offices. 

2. The Right to marry a person of choice is a Fundamental Right says Karnataka High Court

The High court of Karnataka ruled that it is a fundamental right to choose one’s life partner irrespective of caste or religion. The ruling bench was headed by Justices S Sujata and Sachin Shankar Magadan. This is just a statement by the court and not an official bill present in the constitution. 

3. UP Unlawful Religious Conversion Prohibition Ordinance, 2020

The UP government went against the SC order and passed an ordinance against unlawful religious conversions. The ordinance lays down certain rules and regulations to deal with unlawful religious conversion in the state. Many cases in the state have come up after this ordinance. 

4. Jharkhand Government Bans tobacco consumption for all Government Employees 

The state government asked all the government officials to prepare an affidavit to abstain from tobacco consumption completely. This includes all the products with even minimal tobacco content. This will be implemented from 1st April  2021 with the approval of the health and drugs regulatory bodies of India.

1. The Repo Rate remains the same in Monetary Policy 2020-21

The RBI has kept the repo rate at 4% in its monetary policy of 2020-21. Not only this but the Reverse Repo Rate at 3.35% and the Bank rate at 4.25% will also remain the same for the Monetary Policy 2020-21. The reason is to boost the economy in tough pandemic times where the economic condition of most households is not good. 

2. The Biggest FDI Source of India is the US –  Ministry of Commerce and Industry

The first half of 2020-21 in India saw the US as its biggest Foreign Direct Investor. This is according to the information shared by the Ministry of commerce and industry. USD 7.12 billion was the average amount that India received between April-September 2020 from the US.

3. National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme sees the highest demand for work

The recent analysis of the data available on the portal reveals that the demand for work is at an all-time high. This is mainly due to the pandemic where jobless migrant workers returned to villages. 96% gram panchayats logged in the portal compared to the previous seven years.

1. 56th Raising Day

The Border Security Force’s Raising Day took place on 1st December 2020 in Delhi. It is part of the UN Peacekeeping Mission where contingents are trained every year. This was the 56th year of BSF celebrating the Raising Day.

1. Quarantine becomes the Word of the Year 2020

Cambridge Dictionary declared Quarantine as the word of the year defeating “Lockdown” and “Pandemic”. The result is according to the most searched word in the Cambridge Dictionary and for 2020 it was quarantine. 

2. Top 10 Police Station in India

The Ministry of Home Affairs made the list of top police stations in India official for the year 2020. The Nongpok Sekmai police station in Manipur tops the list followed by the AWPS-Suramangalam station and Kharsang police station. The consideration factors were cases, achievements, discipline, crime rate, and more. 

3. Global Teacher Prize 2020

A primary teacher from Maharashtra, Ranjitsinh Disale won the Global Teacher Prize this year. The award came with a 1 million dollar prize for an outstanding contribution to the education sector. Varkey Foundation is the sponsor of this event in partnership with UNESCO. The idea is to promote change in the education sector by highlighting the hard work of the professionals. 

Health and Sanitisation

1. Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine seeks UK Govt. Approval

The UK is the first country to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in the world. The vaccine received approval on 2 December 2020 by the  Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. 

2. 900 Cr for Mission Covid Suraksha

As part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat, the central government has released 900 Crores for Indian Covid-19 Vaccine Development Mission. The idea is to provide indigenous, affordable, and accessible coronavirus vaccines for all the citizens of India. 

3. World AIDS Day 2020

1st December was World AIDS Day and the theme was  “Global solidarity, resilient HIV services.” Global leaders and citizens spoke about threats by Covid-19 on the HIV initiated by WHO. HIV prevention, testing, and treatment were other important topics of discussion. 

4. World Malaria Report 2020

WHO recently released the World Malaria Report for the year 2020. India saw a decline in malaria cases by 17.6% compared to last year. It is the only high endemic country to achieve this decline. 

Environment and Ecology

1. Global Climate Provisional Report by WMO

The World Meteorological Organization declared 2020 among the three warmest years on record. In addition to this 2011-2020 becomes the warmest decade ever. The final report will come out in March 2021. It is mainly to keep a track of global warming over the years.

2. UAE Generates Electricity from Coal

The United Arab Emirates managed to become the first gulf country that successfully generated electricity from coal. The aim is to increase the supply of electricity in Dubai and reduce electricity costs for the locals residing there. This is part of the UAE’s goal to produce 100% solar energy by 2050.
