1. Indian Navy’s TROPEX-21 Exercise 

Indian Navy is famous for its war game exercises called Theatre level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX-21).

The exercise is currently going on in the Indian Ocean where all the units including aircraft, ships, and submarines participate. The event began in January. 

2. Civil Aviation Ministry Raises Air Fare by 30% 

The rising fuel prices are negatively impacting the economy.

To keep up with it, the Ministry of Civil Aviation increased the air fair by 30% till 31 March 2021.

The upper price of the two-hour-long flight will now range around 24,200 at most. 

3. 31st District of Karnataka

Karnataka now has 31 districts in the state as Vijayanagara became an addition to the list on 13 February 2021.

Hosapete will be the headquarters of the district.

Vijayanagara was before a portion of the Ballari district but was divide under the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964. 

Economy and Infrastructure

1. Fisheries Hub in Goa

The Government of India has decided to work on the infrastructure of Goa by investing 400 Crores for making a fisheries hub in the state.

Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of Fisheries made the official announcement on 7 February 2021. 

International Relations

1. The Square Kilometre Array Observatory

Another intergovernmental organization is added to the list called Square Kilometre Array Observatory.

SKAO will solely work on radio astronomy with two radio telescope networks. They will also set up the largest radio telescope in the world.

2. The New WTO Chief

The world Trade Organisation is set to have its first woman and African Chief,  Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala. She is a Nigerian economist who also served as the finance minister of the USA.

The Biden government helped her reach the position with full support. 

3. US Government to rejoin UNHRC

The Biden government is turning back all the tables in the country by reversing decisions made by the former President, Donald Trump.

The country has decided to join back the United Nations Human Rights Council after last year Trump declared them targeting Israel unfairly. 

Science and Technology

1. First Thunderstorm Research Testbed of India

India will have its thunderstorm research testbed by the next five years. The Indian Metrological department made the announcement to develop it in Balasore, Odisha.

Indian Space Research Organisation and the Defence Research and Development Organisation will also work on the project jointly.

2. World’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm

The Largest Offshore Windfarm in the World will be built by 2030 in South Korea. The 8.2GW power complex will be in Jeonnam province.

A deal of  USD 43 billion deal was signed after which the official announcement was made. The idea is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 nationally.

3. World’s First Energy Island 

The North Sea of Denmark will see the construction of the world’s first energy island. The plan approval came out on 4 February 2021 with the main objective to save green energy.

This energy will be used to satisfy the electricity needs of around 3 million Europeans. The size of 18 football fields will make up the artificial island.

1. Uttarakhand Glacier Burst

The Nanda Devi Glacier in Uttarakhand broke off on 7 February 2021 and flooded the Alaknanda river system. The outburst broke off two Hydel Power Projects. The plants were 

Tapovan hydel project of NTPC and the Rishi Ganga Project. 

2. The Tokyo Olympics Chief Resigns

The committee chief of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will be resigning from his post soon. The decision comes after him making sexist comments against women saying that they tend to talk too much. 

Art and Culture

1. “Bittu” gets shortlisted for Oscars 2021

Bittu, an Indian short made it to the nominations of Oscar 2021 under the Live-action category.  This is the 93rd edition of the Academy Awards and the final results will come out on 15th March 2021.

The first entry made by India was “Jallikattu” but it didn’t make the cut. 

2. Wildlife Photographer of 2020 

Robert Irwin, a 17-year-old from  Australia won the best wildlife photographer award and received the People’s Choice Award 2020.

His aerial photograph of the Australian summer bushfires was the deciding factor that he sent in as the entry. He is the son of Steve Irwin, a former Australian wildlife conservationist.
