Polity and Governance

1. The First Paperless Budget

Uttar Pradesh became the first state in India to present a paperless budget on 22 February 2021.

The assembly members received Ipads to look at the budget and its highlights. The state also came up with an app named ‘Uttar Pradesh Sarkar ka Budget’ available on the play store. 

2. Guidelines to Regulate Social Media

Now the social media and over-the-top platforms will have to follow the guidelines issued by the Indian government on 25 February 2021.

The latest decision came into the news after the cabinet ministers made the official announcement. The empowerment of Indian citizens on these media was also appreciated during the announcement. 

3. Election Dates Announced for Five States 

Puducherry, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and West Bengal will have their election results out on 2 May as per the announcement made by the Election Commission on 26 February 2021.

West Bengal and Assam will have elections in 8 and 2 phases respectively while the other three states will have a single day election. 

Economy and Infrastructure

1. Mumbai Undersea Tunnel

Mumbai is all set to get India’s first undersea tunnel by 2023. This is an extension of the Mumbai Coastal Road project connecting Versova to the Sea link.

There will be two tunnels for which around 8 to 9 months of construction work will require individually. 

2. National Urban Digital Mission 

The Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs made the official announcement about the Urban Digital Mission on 23 February 2021.

The idea is to work on the digital infrastructure of the country to accompany digital initiatives by the government for welfare and support. 

International Relations

1. Saudi Arabia Armed Forces 

The government of Suadi Arabia has now allowed women to join the armed forces. This is a big step for the country in terms of women’s empowerment. Women can now serve as soldiers, lance corporals, and sergeants. 

2. BRICS 2021 Website

The External Affairs Minister of India took the initiative to launch a website for BRICS 2021. All the information related to the event taking place in India will be updated on the website.

The chairman of the BRICS will be India this year and it will work on strengthening all five economies. 

Health and Sanitisation 

1. H5N8 virus

The first case of H5N8 was reported in Russia earlier this month. It is a bird flu virus strain reported in humans to the World Health Organisation.

The flu outbreak in December 2020 infected 7 poultry farmers. But this flu is fatal for animals and not humans. 

2. Intensified Mission Indradhanush 3.0

An intensified version of Mission Indradhnush has been launched by the health minister of India.

The government also created an official portal with certain guidelines that need to be followed for IMI 0.3. The central focus of the mission will be to provide vaccination to pregnant women and children in times of pandemic. 

Sports and Events

1. Another Title for Novak Djokovic 

The world’s best tennis player, Novak Djokovic won the 9th Australian Open Title.

This took place on 21 February 2021and was his  18th Grand Slam win. He defeated Daniil Medvedev from Russia. Here, Naomi Osaka also won her 2nd Australian Open Title.

2. The Narendra Modi Stadium 

The largest cricket stadium in the world is now open in Motera, Gujarat named Narendra Modi Stadium.

The president of India, Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the stadium. The test match between England and India also took place on the same day there.

3. Khelo India National Winter Games

Khelo India National Games were started off on 26 February 2021 as Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the event virtually. The games will continue till 2 March as the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will host them.

Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council and Winter Games Association of J&K are also partners in this event. The states and the union territories will be sending their teams for the event.  

Awards and Recognition

1. The US Anti-Corruption Award

This year USA’s anti-corruption award was won by an Indian activist – Anjali Bharadwaj.

She has been part of the Right to Information movement for more than 20 years now. This award ceremony honored 12 such activists for their active participation.
