1. Stay on three Farm Laws: SC 

The farmer’s protests in the country are heating up as many have taken the roads of the National Capital. The Supreme court took another step by putting a stay on all three farm laws on 12 January 2020. The central government also received criticism over poor management of the situation. 

2. Women Pilots at Army Aviation Corps from 2022

The Armi Aviation Corps will recruit female pilots from 2022 who will carry out operations at the borders. The chief general of the Indian Army announced a decision to move towards gender equality in the country. It’s a step towards feminism as before women mostly worked at ground level. 

3. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 3.0

600 districts in India saw the launch of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 3.0 on 15 January 2021. The scheme is again to make peace with the angry farmers of the country who are protesting now. The budget of the government is Rs 948.90 crore for scheme implementation.

1. Arunachal Pradesh to Produce Vanadium

The Geological Survey of India revealed Arunachal Pradesh to be home to vanadium deposits. Vanadium is known to make titanium and steel stronger. And with this discovery, the state is set to become the prime producer of vanadium in India. 

2. The First Paperless Union Budget of India 

The covid era saw many firsts in India and in the world. And an addition to the list is the Union budget of 2021 which will be paperless for the first time since 1949. This is to avoid the social gathering of the government officials as now then can have a soft copy each to study. 

3. Insect Apocalypse

The expert entomologists of the planet have noticed a decrease of 1% to 2% of its insects per year. The alarming situation is termed as insect apocalypse as the main reason of it are climate change and resource exploitation. The future seems to be a blur as the matter is very complex and enormous in nature. 

Economy and Infrastructure 

1. India’s GDP likely to get hit in FY 2020-21

The Gross Domestic Product of India is speculated to contract by 7.7% in the fiscal year 2020-21. The report is according to the National Statistical Office and its income estimates as they study different sectors. The assumption is that the agriculture sector may be unaffected. 

2. New Foreign Trade Policy 2021

The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry confirmed rolling out the new trade policy to make India a trade leader globally. The new policy will be active for five years and the process for its implementation will be in April 2021 as it is still under formulation. 

International Relations

1. US re-designates Cuba as State Sponsor of Terrorism

The former president of the USA, Obama took the decision to remove Cuba as the state sponsor but with Joe Biden taking over, Cuba is back in its position. Cuba will serve as the State Sponsor of Terrorism as they have been active against terrorism at the global level.

2. No Foreign Head as Chief Guest for Republic Day Celebrations

Its been almost 50 years since India always invites a foreign leader for the republic day celebration. But due to the covid pandemic, the republic day celebration of 2021 will not have a foreign chief guest as the ministry of external affairs confirmed. 

3. India and Japan on Information & Communications Technology

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the countries on 15 January 2021 for ICT cooperation. The Information and Communications Technology agreement was signed virtually the area of focus are 5G technology, telecom safety, and smart cities. 

4. National Election after 14 years in Palestine 

The state of Palestine will have a national election after 14 long years as president Mahmoud Abbas confirmed.  There will be three elections held in the nation namely – parliamentary, presidential, and National Council. They will take place in May 2021. 

5. India – Vietnam Strategic Partnership

The defense ministry of both countries had a dialogue on 12 January 2021 to strengthen the defense system of the nations. The meeting mostly included armed force engagement as part of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Science and Technology

1. IMD’s Weather Condition Website

The India Meteorological Department moved more towards the digital space by launching a public outreach website portal to update local areas weather from time to time. This real-time interaction will make sure that the weather conditions are updated with real-time data available for future researches as well. 

2. Now Free Domain in Local Indian Languages

The National Internet Exchange of India will be offering free of cost registered domain name in any official language according to the Indian constitution. The idea is to boost the local languages used in domain names as the offer is valid for new users only. A free registered email id in local languages will also be provided.
