List of Airports in India – International and Domestic Airports

The Airport Authority of India is the body that manages both the international and domestic airports of India. This body manages a total of 125 Airports, which includes 81 domestic airports, 11 international airports, 25 civil enclaves at defence airfields, and 8 custom airports.

As per the Airport Authority of India’s data from November 2016, India has 486 total airports, airstrips, flying schools, and military bases available in the country. It has 123 airports with scheduled commercial flights including some with dual civilian and army use. It also has 34 international airports.

An International Airport is an airport with customs and border control facilities enabling passengers to travel between countries. International airports are usually larger than domestic airports and often feature longer runways and facilities to accommodate the heavier aircraft commonly used for international airports often also host domestic flights.

A domestic airport is an airport that handles only domestic flights – flights within the same country/nation. Domestic airports do not have customs and immigration facilities and so cannot handle flights to or from a foreign airport.

A joint-use airport is an aerodrome that is used for both military aviation and civil aviation. They typically contain facilities of both a civil airport and a military airbase. A civil enclave is an area at a military airbase allotted for the usage of civil aviation.

Civil enclaves are common in countries like India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan where a part of an airbase, almost invariably a legacy of World War II vintage, is allotted for domestic air traffic instead of building a new civilian airport.

An airbase is an aerodrome used as a military base by a military force for the operation of military aircraft. It has some facilities similar to a civilian airport – for example, air traffic control and fire fighting. Some military aerodromes have passenger facilities.
