The Indian Premier League is the largest professional domestic cricket league. The Board of Control for Cricket in India established it in 2008. It is conducted between 8 teams standing for 8 different cities in India.

IPL usually takes place from March to May annually. It is highly popular in terms of public attendance. There have been 12 seasons of the IPL tournament up till now. Let us see the complete list of IPL winners from 2008 till date.

IPL Background History

  • Zee Entertainment Enterprises founded the Indian Cricket League in 2008.
  • Initially it was not acknowledged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India or the International Cricket Council.
  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India introduced the Indian Premier League.
  • A seven-person governing council would run the IPL including retired Indian sportspersons and the BCCI officials.
  • Moreover the winning two teams of the IPL would qualify for that year’s Champions League Twenty20.
  • Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mohali, and Mumbai are the cities participating in the league.
  • The franchises of the league were all sold for a total of $723.59 million.

IPL Extensions And Terminations

  • In 2010, it declared that the new franchises – Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala – would be a part of the league by 2011.
  • Although, a year later it was declared that the Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise would be terminated.
  • In 2012, it announced that the team of the Deccan Chargers would be terminated.
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad introduced the very next month.
  • In 2013, Pune Warriors India withdrew themselves and the franchise was officially terminated due to financial conflicts.
  • In 2015, Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals, suspended for match-fixing and the betting scandal.
  • The teams of Rising Pune Supergiant and the Gujarat Lions replaced Chennai and Rajasthan.

IPL Management And Format

  • Each team plays twice with each other in a home-and-away round-robin format in the league tournament.
  • Each team gets at least 2 chances to enter the IPL final.
  • Players for a team can acquire by the following methods:
    1. The annual player auction.
    2. Trading players with other teams.
    3. Signing replacements for unavailable players.
  • The team may have a player range from 18-25.
  • The total salary of the team may not exceed a limit of Rs.850 million.
  • Under-19 players cannot be picked unless they have played first-class or List A cricket before.
  • At the maximum, a team of 11 can only include 4 overseas players.
  • The duration of the contract offered to a sportsperson is one year, which can be extended by one or two years.
  • A time limit does not exist for the players to finish the match.
  • IPL works on television-timeouts.
  • A duration of two-and-a-half-minutes is offered to each team for planning the strategy during each inning.
  • In 2018, the Umpire Decision Review System was introduced in the IPL.
  • The 2019 season had a prize money offer of Rs.500 million to IPL Winners team.
  • The first runners up received Rs.125 million.
  • The second runners up received Rs. 87.5 million.
  • The team which came fourth received Rs. 87.5 million.
  • The other teams were not awarded any prize money.
  • The IPL rules demand that half of the prize money must be distributed among the team players.
  • The Orange Cap Award goes to the top run-scorer in the IPL during a season.
  • The Purple Cap Award goes to the top wicket-taker in the IPL during a season.
  • The Man Of The Tournament Award or the Most Valuable Player Award goes to the best player of the IPL season.
  • The IPL Governing Council is accountable for the tournament functions and events.
