UMANG – Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance is an amalgamated government-administered app launched by the prime minister of India – Shri Narendra Modi on 23rd November 2017, at the fifth edition of the Global Conference on Cyberspace in New Delhi.

The objectives of this app include:

Umang App

The app can be downloaded on iOS, android, KaiOS, and Windows systems. Downloading the app requires:

  1. Directly installing the app from Google Play, App Store, or the IVR.
  2. Scanning the QR code given on the official website- web.umang.gov.in
  3. Receive the UMANG app link by giving a missed call to 97183-97183.
  4. Enter your phone number on the official website to get the link to the UMANG app on your phone.
  • The size of the UMANG app is 12 MB.
  • The app holds a ‘Freeware’ license which is proprietary, i.e. distributed at no cost to the end-user.
  • The app works on regular wifi connections.
  • After downloading the UMANG app, linking the Aadhaar document with the app may be asked for, however the same is optional.

  • The UMANG app was created by the ‘Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’ and the ‘National e-Governance Division’ and is managed by the same.
  • It went through several beta tests November 2016 onwards – i.e. before its launch.

  • After downloading the app, one must click on the register option which leads to redirection to the mobile number verification page. Next, the mobile number must be entered in order to receive an OTP as a confirmation to complete the UMANG app registration process,
  • After the OTP has been confirmed, the creation of an MPIN would be required and once that is set, the registration would be done with.
  • This would enable the view of the UMANG app home page which would display the recently opened services available through the UMANG app.
  • The login can be made through the registered phone number, the MPIN or any connected social media account.
  • However, different procedures require different details and credentials such as UAN, PRAN, PAN, etc.
  • To find a specific UMANG service, the name of the central or state government have to be looked up in the UMANG search bar to access the chosen app.
  • All the government services provided through UMANG App are free of charge.
  • The UMANG app has customer support for user convenience from 8 am to 8 pm for all days of the week.

There are several other services that are offered which include approximately 263 central services, 430 state services, 182 utility bill services. There also 59 central departments and 71 state departments.

UMANG App Sections

HOW TO CHECK EPF BALANCE IN THE UMANG APP?

  • Select the EPF section on the UMANG app’s main page.
  • This will lead you to the UMANG EPFO login page
  • Enter details like your UAN and OTP received in order to log in.
  • Choose from the following options: Employee Centric Services, General Services, Employer Centric Services, Pensioner Services, or eKYC Services as per requirement.
  • To check your EPF Passbook balance, select the “View Passbook” link on the UMANG EPF main page.
  • The Passbook Account Detail page will now show on the app. It will display the login UAN along with the related PPF account details.
  • Next, select the specific PPF account number to view the detailed EPF passbook.
  • Select the Deposits or Withdrawals options to check certain transactions made regarding your EPF Account.

EPF WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURE IN THE UMANG APP

  • We can check the EPF withdrawal claim through the UMANG app after login to the application’s EPF portal.
  • To withdraw EPF, select the ‘Raise Claim’ option.
  • The UMANG app EPFO module can be used to submit PF withdrawal applications, with requesting final settlement using Form 19 among the rest.

  • Out of the 3.76 crores contributing members recorded on March 31, 2016, as many as 1.68 crores have linked their Aadhaar numbers with UAN.
  • Approximately 4 crore members of the retirement fund body Employee Provident Fund Organisation would soon be able to settle their claims like Employee Provident Fund withdrawal through mobile application UMANG.
