What is the full form of RO?
RO stands for Reverse Osmosis, a filtration technique that removes impurities and large molecules from water. In order to make the water clear it is made to pass through a semipermeable and porous membrane. This technology is usually applied to the mass production of potable water.
The solute is the resultant product after the completion of this process and accumulates at that side of the membrane through which water passes first. Reverse Osmosis removes all the suspended organisms dissolved in water.
Working principle of Reverse Osmosis
RO is the reverse of osmosis. When the salt solution is put under pressure greater than the osmotic pressure and pushed against the semipermeable membrane, the solution transitions from a highly concentrated solution to a less concentrated solution.
Difference between Osmosis and Reverse Osmosis
Osmosis | Reverse Osmosis |
Allows the solvent molecules to migrate through the semipermeable membrane from a lower concentration to a higher concentration. | Allows the solvent molecules to pass through the semipermeable from an area of high concentration to low concentration when pressure applied is higher than the osmotic pressure. |
natural process | natural process |
Takes place along with a potential gradient. | Takes place against the potential gradient. |
Occurs during stomatal opening or when the roots absorb water from the soil. | Occurs in the water purification system. |
