The cultural practices of the forest peoples during the Stone Age period in what is now the Congo region were eventually replaced by those of the Bantu tribes.

The Stone Age culture of the Forest peoples, who were the first known residents of the area that is now the Congo, was gradually supplanted by that of the Bantu tribes. The Kongo, often referred to as the Bakongo, were the most populous Bantu people in the area. They founded numerous kingdoms, the majority of which were unstable, at the mouth of the Congo River as well as further north and south. Mbanza Kongo, a town in northern Angola close to the border with the DRC, served as the capital of this Kongolese kingdom for a time before it was renamed So Salvador by the Portuguese.
