Quiz on Colombia

Prior to the arrival of the Spanish in 1492, Colombia was inhabited by various indigenous groups such as the Muisca Confederation, Quimbaya Civilization, and Tairona Chiefdoms. The Spanish colonization of the region ultimately led to the establishment of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, with Bogotá serving as its capital. After gaining independence from Spain in 1819, the Federation of “Gran Colombia” disintegrated in 1830. Colombia and Panama were in New Granada. The newly formed country experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858) and the United States of Colombia (1863) before establishing itself as the Republic of Colombia in 1886. Political violence persisted as well. Panama broke away in 1903. Since the 1960s, the nation has experienced an asymmetric low-intensity armed conflict, which grew in the 1990s but decreased after 2005. Colombia’s diverse topography, spectacular terrain, and rich cultural history have shaped strong regional identities.

This migration took place approximately 5,000 years ago. The Pubenza archaeological site and the El Totumo archaeological site are located in the Magdalena Valley, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of Bogotá.
