Diego de Almagro is traditionally credited with the distinction of being the first individual to discover Chile. Almagro was Francisco Pizarro’s partner, and as such, he was given responsibility over the region that is now known as Nueva Toledo. In the year 1537, he arranged an expedition that took him to the central region of Chile, but once there, he didn’t find much value that could compete with the gold and silver that the Incas had in Peru.
