“Big Data is the next big thing in the industry and has a good future. This is one of the reason why I made a switch from Java to Big Data. – Says Jitender”

Do you want a life that keep going on the same pace and doesn’t introduce any variations over a long time?

I can’t. This kind of life doesn’t excite me and results in boredom. I prefer a career that motivates me to keep growing and learning new things.

In the world we live in today, there are uncountable opportunities to do great things in your lives. You can find a career scope in many emerging technologies, especially when you are from an IT background. One such amazing technologies is Big Data.

Known from the fact that Big Data Analytics brings ample opportunities to rebuild our careers from its demand in the market. I decided to switch from my constant schedule at Appster LLP to the new possibilities of Data Analytics.

At Appster LLP, I worked for 5 years as a software engineer. There I was responsible for working on various technologies such as PHP, Mysql, Javascript, and Core Java.

I can’t have a particular flavor of ice cream say vanilla for 5 consistent years. Then how will I be doing the same work throughout my career?

How does Jitender learn Big Data?

So with my urge to learn the updated trends in the new technologies, I moved my foot towards Big Data. I searched for a few training institutes that can make me learn the latest technologies of Big Data. Then I came to know about DataFlair from a friend who recently cracked his Big Data interview with the help of DataFlair.

I took my first step by enrolling for Big Data Hadoop and Spark Course and started getting trained from the wonderful instructors who are well-versed with the courses and the technologies. The paradigm of training the students are very good at DataFlair. Apart from the training material, sessions and assignments, which you will find in all the other training institutes, the thing that separates DataFlair from other institutes is its commitment to the candidates. Few things that gave me some of the best experiences while learning about Big Data are:

The instructor knows a lot about Big Data and used to share real-life cases with the students for their better understanding.

The instructor also shared his own experiences with the project and the technologies. He also shared his project architecture.

The institute is very helping. Even after the completion of the course, I asked them for more assignments/training materials and I get it.

If I needed any advice while working on the project or got into any trouble, I easily get their help.

After getting prepared, I appeared in an interview for the post of senior software engineer at Expedia. The company conducted my interview process in 5 rounds. The 2 rounds were telephonic in which they asked me about Hadoop, Spark and Hive and how I used these in my projects. The other 3 interviews were face to face in which they ask me how will I develop a Big Data system/pipeline based on certain scenarios, data structure problem solving and spark programs.

Following questions were asked during the Expedia Interview:

  • How is exception handling is done in spark? In what cases we use Option Type in exception handling
  • Difference b/w Impala and Hive and Pig
  • How to write a Singleton Pattern in Scala
  • Any Limit on the execution of lambda function in AWS lambda, passing a parameter from one lambda to another lambda in AWS lambda
  • Object in Scala, companion class in Scala, closure in Scala, pattern matching in Scala and Case classes in Scala
  • Hive partitioning and bucketing
  • What do you use apache airflow for? why don’t u use Oozie
  • HBase, Spark streaming windows and Kafka offsets and basics

Finally, I performed well to get my place at Expedia as a senior software engineer.

I would like to thank DataFlair that is helping the candidates towards their goal and putting real efforts towards that.

Advice to Others

My advice to my fellow mates and the aspirants is to rebuild your career with Big Data and the other latest technologies. Also when you are doing training with DataFlair, try to complete all the assignments and questions of the session and be ready with your doubts in the next session. If you procrastinate things you will not be able to participate well in the doubt and questions session. Doing all the assignments and projects is your best bet to clear practical interview questions.
