How to Securely Leak to the Press

Job-ready Online Courses: Dive into Knowledge. Learn More!

You may have knowledge that has to be made public during political or social unrest. Sometimes you can’t discuss the facts you have publicly without running the risk of facing government harassment, losing your career, or endangering your family. In these circumstances, you need to be able to deliver the information you have to a journalist who can notify the public without having your identity revealed. You saw a secret and decided it needed to be revealed. But how can one go about doing that without being hurt?

Here are some methods to ensure that you leak the data securely to th.

1. Download the relevant application using cybersecurity services

You can use any smartphone software specific news organizations use to make and receive encrypted phone calls and messages. You can use one of these applications to speak with a journalist.

Also, there are various news companies that employ different applications that let people provide them with information anonymously and safely. But first, find out what service the news organisation you wish to talk to uses. Typically, you can learn this by visiting the news outlet’s website.

Please Note:

These services typically do not allow you to submit papers, but you may communicate with journalists or send and receive messages on the delivery of documents or other information.
Before you may speak with the journalist via the app if the service needs you to add them to your phone’s contacts, add them using a fictitious name.

2. Get on a burner phone

You cannot use your work or personal phone to call in a genuinely anonymous tip to the media. So you must get a burner phone and leave all electronic devices at home.

  • A convenience shop in an area of town with a low income is the perfect spot to purchase a burner phone. Look for a location that doesn’t appear to have any surveillance cameras or that has older cameras with often deleted and covered-up footage.
  • Purchase an inexpensive prepaid phone with sufficient minutes to last as long as you want. At the very least, prepare to make a few calls. Use cash to pay for the phone.
  • You must travel somewhere you don’t usually go to make your phone call. Signals from mobile phones may be tracked, and the device logs the wireless networks it has accessed and the locations.
  • Wipe the phone’s memory clean when your call is over, turn it off entirely, and remove the battery. Take a different path back home than you used to get there.
  • Don’t visit the same place more than once if you need to make further calls in the future. To prevent anyone from noticing a trend, keep your locations as you might wish to trash the phone after each call if you think the authorities are aware of what you are doing and are pursuing you.
  • Reset the phone to factory settings, erase all data, and destroy it. After then, break the phone and all of its chips with a hammer.
  • Wrap the pieces in something else to disguise them, and then dispose of them in a public trashcan or dumpster that is not close to your place of business or residence.

3. Through EMail

Obtain copies of the information you want to release in writing. Carefully make copies of any papers. Make sure that whatever you print, scan or download cannot be used to identify you.

  • Purchasing your materials offline and ordering them online are not recommended. Instead, get what you need at the post office across town.
  • Don’t provide the postal clerk with any information that could help identify you while paying with cash for your mailing goods.
  • Get simple, common stamps instead of rare or valuable ones. Purchasing a prepaid, flat-rate sending envelope can be an additional choice.
  • If you are hand-lettering the envelope, use plain block letters for the address.
  • Look for a mailbox that is not close to or visible from security cameras. For instance, you would not want to use a mailbox next to an ATM because the mailbox was probably visible to the ATM’s security camera.
  • You may send physical papers and electronic documents through regular mail, like those on an SD card.
  • Therefore, avoid using a return address that is connected to you and send the letter from a sidewalk mailbox in a place you don’t frequently visit. Include a copy of the reporter on the envelope if you want them to investigate your story.

4. Utilise SecureDrop:

Many news organisations use the online document-sharing program SecureDrop.

  • This service enables sources to send journalists anonymous, encrypted documents.
  • You and the journalist can also communicate by entering a message and emailing it. After sending the paper, you can respond from within the service.
  • You need to download the Tor browser to use SecureDrop. The procedure is identical to downloading any other program, and the browser functions the same way as any other web browser.

5. Use only free public Wi-Fi:

Even though these encrypted services guarantee that the data you provide cannot be opened or read, the interaction itself may still be recorded.

  • Avoid using Wi-Fi at your house or place of employment since it might be used to identify you.
Locate a café, library, or other public space with free Wi-Fi. Go somewhere that isn’t close to your home,
  • workplace, school, or any other area you frequently visit. Consider going somewhere on the opposite side of town.
  • If you have to communicate more than once, don’t go back to the same place – find a new location for each communication.
  • If you need to pay anything to get there, use cash. You may be identified and located with any credit or debit card. All electronic gadgets should be left at home because they can also be tracked.
  • If you can, go on walking. Don’t operate your own vehicle. If you must take public transportation, exit the vehicle a few stops before your destination, turn around, and walk back.

6. For iPhones and Android smartphones, Signal is secure texting software that is open source and free:

  • Free end-to-end encrypted calls and messaging are available via Signal. Signal simply saves your phone number, the day you signed up, and the last time you were active.
  • Contrast this to WhatsApp, which we do not advise using since it saves user contacts’ info. Messages for everyone in the chat can also automatically self-destruct in Signal after a certain period of time.
  • This makes listening in on your discussions much more difficult, but possible.

Please Note:

Keep in mind that Signal demands that both users provide their phone numbers. Consider enrolling in Signal using a number that your organization is unlikely to be able to connect to when contacting journalists, and be aware that Signal is not intended to provide perfect anonymity.

7. For additional anonymity, think about using the Tor Browser before researching news outlets.

  • A customised version of Firefox is used by Tor Browser. Before connecting you to your destination, Tor encrypts and tunnels your web traffic over a large worldwide network of computers.
  • When you use Tor to access a website (like Amazon.com), you will appear to be connecting from a distant location, maybe in another country. Once again, avoid conducting this type of research on a work computer or network.

Conclusion

It is complex and requires a lot of work to safely leak information without being discovered or the other side being able to determine who did it. Although deciding who did it typically requires hard work, using these methods can help add extra layers of security and help you accomplish the task safely.
