A third-party administrator, (Full form of TPA) is a company that manages the insurance company’s claim handling process. Additionally, the TPA is responsible for any grievance or redress process for the claimant. Health insurance is a must-have for, unlike an insurance company, TPA is a separate entity. Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) licenses these organizations to act on behalf of insurance companies. As if it were an extension of the insurance company itself.

As more and more people purchase health insurance, the number of claims has risen as a result of the increase in policyholders. It becomes increasingly difficult for the insurers to handle all of these claims on their own. Health insurance TPA is here to save the day. These companies assist insurers in processing the large number of claims that come in every day.

TPA & its importance in healthcare

If you use a TPA, you can rest assured that your claims-related questions and concerns are addressed. To make things even better, the validity of a claim application is also checked by a TPA. To service its policyholders, every insurance company appoints a third-party administrator (TPA). IRDA (Third Party Administrators – Health Services) (Amendment), 2019 requires every insurance company to give policyholders the option of selecting a

TPA from a list impaneled by the IRDA. At the time of renewal of insurance policies, insureds can also change their third-party administrator (TPA). Typically, a TPA has a team of medical professionals registered with the Indian Medical Council, insurance consultants, legal experts, management consultants, and IT specialists.

TPA Facilities

TPA provides the following facilities as far as health care is concerned;

1. Takes care of the track of their policyholder: A TPA organization receives these records from insurance companies once the policy has been issued by the insurance company concerned.

Most of the insurance company’s responsibilities are handled by TPAs. Policyholders, as well as their beneficiaries, receive identification cards with a number specifically designated to that policyholder.

2. Claim settlements: In addition to settling your claim applications, a TPA plays an important role in the insurance industry. Cashless claim settlement means that the TPA coordinates directly with the hospital to settle any outstanding medical bills that have been incurred.

Aside from that, the TPA verifies your claim for admissible expenses in accordance with the policy terms. The TPA can also investigate hospital records if there are any doubts about the claim.

3. Facilitated to claim cashless: When it comes to cashless health insurance claims, a third-party administrator assists the policyholder. Upon submitting the required forms, the hospital notifies your health insurance TPA of the information provided. The TPA is responsible for all other aspects of the hospital’s medical services.

You should be aware that in order to take advantage of a cashless facility, you must seek treatment at a pre-defined network hospital in your insurance policy. Although it is a convenient feature, it is up to the insured to decide where he or she wants to receive treatment.

4. They are also responsible for monitoring and adding new medical facilities to the list of network hospitals for the insurance company. If you have a health insurance plan with a network hospital, you can use the cashless medical facility at that hospital.

Factors such as the hospital’s facilities, quality of services, and track record are considered when adding a hospital to the network. These network hospitals are listed in a general insurance policy at the point of purchase or renewal.

5. Additionally, a TPA is also responsible for maintaining a 24-hour helpdesk. Any emergency claims of the insured, as well as any questions regarding claims, are dealt with in this way. These helpdesk services go above and beyond what your insurance company provides.
