What is the full form of SDM?

SDM stands for Sub Divisional Magistrate, an administrative officer below the district level responsible for controlling subdivisions formed by the division of districts. An SDM can either be an experienced senior officer of State Civil Services with relevant work experience in subordinate roles or a junior member of the Indian Administrative Service. He/She takes advantage of the powers of the collector and Executive Magistrate.

An SDM performs magisterial duties that come under the 1973 criminal procedure code and other minor actions. Usually, a PCS Ranking Officer, either the Collector magistrate or tax inspector authorize an SDM and all tehsils or subdivisions come under the control of the SDM. Since an SDM has full control over the Tahsildars of a subdivision, he/she is a link that connects the District Officer and Tahsildars of a subdivision.
