What is the full form of ONGC?

ONGC stands for Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, an Indian crude Oil and Gas multinational corporation whose head office is in New Delhi, India. It is a public sector project under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. ONGC was reconfigured as a limited enterprise under the Company Act, 1956 in February 1994.

History of ONGC

  • The Indian government built the hydrocarbon sector after India gained independence.
  • Became a limited enterprise in February 1994, under the Company Act, 1956. It then become a public service enterprise and got renamed to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation.
  • In 1999, ONGC and Indian Oil Corporation bought joint-stock and expanded their domestic and international sector.
  • Formed a subsidiary named ONGC Videsh Ltd. (OVL) and entered the global market in the year 2002-03.
  • India’s biggest profit-making PSU in 2019-20. Ranked seventh globally (by Platts) among the top 250 energy firms.
