What is the full form of OCD?
OCD stands for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. In this illness, an individual constantly experiences negative emotions or obsessions and feels an uncontrollable urge to perform uncontrollable and repetitive activities or actions.
Though the individual may realize that these obsessions and compulsions are irrational, they still cannot withstand them because their mind is stuck on that specific thought or urge. There are no specific causes of OCD and it can arise from a mixture of genetic and environmental factors.
Symptoms of OCD
There are two types of symptoms of OCD. The first one includes obsessions and the second type includes compulsions. Most OCD patients show both obsessive-compulsive disorders.
Symptoms of obsessions
Obsessions usually include unwanted thoughts or desires that are upsetting for an individual and can trigger anxiety and depression. Following are some symptoms of obsessions:
- Mysophobia
- Doubts regarding certain activities like having not locked the door or switched the stove off.
- Fear of pictures of yourself or the people you love being harmed.
- Fear of missing and not remembering things or not having things that you might need with you.
- Highly centered on moral or religious concepts.
Symptoms of compulsions
Compulsions are repeated actions performed to relieve the stress caused by the obsession. Following are some symptoms of compulsion:
- Cleaning hands until the skin becomes raw
- Repeated monitoring and inspection of the door, stove, and other devices in order to ensure that they are closed or switched off.
- Repeated inspection of loved ones to make sure they are safe and away from harm.
- Trapping, counting, and placing items in a particular order.
