What is the full form of an LED?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, a PN-junction diode. It produces light when it passes in the forward path via an electric current. The mixed energy provided by the N-side electron and P-side hole is in the form of light and heat. A colourless semiconductor substance helps in the production of LED and the diode junction helps in the radiation of light. The semiconductor material used and the doping quantity decide the color of the light emitted.

Working Principle

LEDs combine a P type semiconductor with a higher concentration of a hole and a N type semiconductor with a higher concentration of electrons. The electrons and holes recombine under proper forward voltage at the P-N junction and it releases energy in the form of light.

Types of LED

Following are the types of LEDs:

  • Miniature LEDs
  • Lighting LEDs
  • Red Green Blue LEDs
  • Flash LEDs
  • High-Power LEDs
  • Alphanumeric LEDs

Applications of LED

Some of the fields where we use LEDs include warning systems, optical communications, security systems, robotics, remote-controlled operations, and many more. Apart from these some other areas where we use LEDs are:

  • Various displays
  • Dimming of light
  • Automotive industry
  • TV backlight
