full form of ITI is Industrial Training Institute. It is a government training organization that provides industry-related training to high school students. Though there are some courses that can be applied after the 8th grade. These training institutes offer technical information to students who are interested in gaining technical knowledge instead of higher education.

Directorate-General for Employment and Training (DGET), the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, and the Government of the Union established this institute to provide training in different trades. There are both governmental and private ITIs across India that offer students vocational training.

About ITI course

Interested students need to appear for the All India Trade Test (AITT) and the qualified applicants receive the National Trade Certificate (NTC) after the completion of their training. ITI aims at training candidates that are industry-ready. In order to fulfill this goal, it also administers apprenticeship courses.

The training courses of ITI are trade based i.e., every trade has a particular sector or skill set in which the students receive training. These courses usually vary from 6 months to 2 years. The length of a course depends on the type and nature of the course.

Types of ITI Courses

There are two types of courses offered by ITI:
1. Engineering trades: engineering, science, maths, and technological concepts
2. Non-engineering trades: languages, soft skills, and other sector-specific competencies and expertise

Where engineering courses focus on technique, the non-engineering courses are of non-technical degree.

Eligibility Criteria for ITI Exam

Every course has its own eligibility criteria. Some of these are as below:

  • Student who has completed their 10th from a recognized board or any other examination that is equivalent to the 10th standard.
  • The student should have an aggregate of 35% at least.
  • The student should be between 14 and 40 during the admission period.

ITI Exam Admission Process

The admission process is merit-based. The institutes usually conduct a written examination which the candidates need to pass in order to enroll in the institute. Some private institutes also admit candidates directly.
