What is the full form of FIR?

FIR stands for First Information Report, a document that contains the important details committed by a criminal offence. Though it is not conclusive evidence of a crime committed, it is the starting point for any investigative process for any specific crime.

Following is the content present on the FIR page:

• FIR file name
• Name of the victim, or the person filing the complaint
• Offence description
• Time and place of crime
• Witness statements (If any)
• Offender’s name and description (If known)

Why is FIR Necessary?

It helps with the criminal justice process. Moreover, the cops cannot commence the investigation until the registration of an FIR. Once an FIR is registered its content can’t be altered except by a supreme court or high court decision.

Rules to file an FIR

1. Anyone who has knowledge about the commission of the offence can file an FIR.
2. Police must jot down the information that is given orally.
3. The person filing an FIR can demand the police to read the FIR to him/her.
4. The person filing the FIR must sign the FIR or put the left thumb impression on the document.
5. The person can ask for a copy of FIR free of cost.

Procedure To File FIR

Section 154 of the Act Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 states the procedure to file an FIR.

1. The police should write down the details of any cognizable commission offence.
2. The person making the complaint has the right to read the report written by the police.
3. After the person is done providing information to the police he/she must sign the report.
4. Sign the report after verifying the details recorded by the police as per the information you have given.
5. Those who cannot read or write place their left thumb impression on the paper to ensure that it is a valid record.
6. Always demand a copy of the FIR from the police. It is the right of the people to receive FIR with zero cost.
