What is the full form of DIG?

DIG stands for Deputy Inspector General, a one-star rated police officer in the Indian Police Force who helps the Inspector-General of Police oversee and supervise various police stations. A police officer can become DIG after being promoted from the SSP rank.

Functions of DIG

• Has multiple powers to keep the police disciplined in its region and presents reports to the IGP.
• Works in cooperation with the DM to handle certain incidents.

Procedure to become DIG

• Appear in Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC.
• The selected candidates are appointed as IPS officers and undergo relevant training.
• After completing training, the candidate is either given the post of ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police) or ASP (Assistant Superintendent of Police).
• After this applicants go further up the ranks, first SP (Superintendent of Police), then SSP (Senior Police Superintendent), and finally to the post of DIG (Deputy Inspector General of Police). Promotion is done based on the individual’s experience, achievements, and performance.
