What is the Full form of CNG?

CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas. It acts as a replacement for diesel, petrol, and LPG as it creates less toxic gases as compared to them. There is also less of a risk in case of a leakage, as it is lighter than air and scatters rapidly as soon as released.

History of CNG

  • The late 1800 model: The use of natural gas as a fuel for automobiles started.
  • The US manufactured the very first natural gas engine. Italy and most of the European nations implemented CNG as their primary engine fuel after World War 2.
  • Used in oil reservoirs, we can also obtain it from sewage treatment plants and landfill sites.
  • We compress the natural gas to less than 1% of the standard atmospheric pressures and hold it at a pressure of 20-25 MPa. We use tough cylinders and spherical tanks to distribute it.

Properties of CNG

  • Odourless, colourless, and tasteless compound that has noncorrosive and nontoxic properties.
  • Substitute for gasoline.
  • The main component of CNG is methane.
  • Produces fewer greenhouse gases.
  • It is healthy because it scatters into the air easily.
  • Produced from natural gas wells, coal wells, bed methane wells, and oil wells.

Advantages of CNG

  • It’s cheaper.
  • The maintenance cost of cars running on CNG is low.
  • Environmental friendly.
  • Extends the life of lubricating oil.
  • Needs a high temperature with autoignition of 540oC or more.
