What is the full form of BIS?

BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards. BIS (national standards body of India) operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Nutrition, and Public Distribution. It was set up under the 1986 Bureau of Indian Standards Act, which came into force on 23 December 1986. The ex-officio president of the BIS is responsible for BIS’s administrative oversight.

The regional office of BIS

Though BIS’s headquarter is in New Delhi, it has five regional offices in:

  • Northern Region Office, Chandigarh
  • Western Region Office, Mumbai
  • Southern Region Office, Chennai
  • Eastern Region Office, Kolkata
  • Central Regional Office, Delhi

Main objectives of BIS

  • Make sure that marking and consistency assurance standardizations undergo harmonious implementation.
  • Promotes consistency and quality control.
  • Planning for the identification of standards and their alignment with manufacturing and trade growth.

Primary functions of BIS

  1. Develops, identifies, and encourages Indian Norms.
  2. Has produced over 20,000 principles, as of 1 January 2019.
  3. These principles cover the major financial segments that help firms to grow the product quality and service providers.
  4. Listed 15 industries significant to the sector of India and has a separate Division Council for the development of the Indian Standard that is responsible for monitoring and supervising activities.
  5. Periodically reviews and develops criteria to ensure conformity with the global standards and technological progress.
