What is the full form of TRP?

TRP stands for Television Rating Point, a device that tells whether a show is successful on tv or not. It evaluates which program is the most viewed on the tv screen and is a measure of people’s interest and a program’s success. The greater is its value, the more the number of users viewing the program. This data is important for advertisers as they can put their ads during shows with greater TRPs.

People meter helps determine TRP. It is connected to the TV in thousand of viewers’ homes. These are seen as surveys of TV owners in different demographic and geographic fields.

Various Methods To Determine TRP

Following are the two techniques to measure the TRP value:

1. Picture Matching Method

The people meter monitors the small amounts of picture viewed continuously on a specific TV set. After collecting this information from the survey residences national rating calculation is made.

2. Frequency Monitoring Technique

A people meter calculates the program and time the audience watches on any given day and obtains an average of over 30 days. This provides the number status of the audience for a specific channel.

The measuring frequencies approach is less accurate than the pitcher matching approach.

TRP Manipulation

Over the years there have been cases of TRP manipulation and scams. This is usually done by bribing viewers or by ensuring that a particular channel is listed as the landing page and appears first when the television is switched on. Mumbai Police received a case in October 2020 against some channels, accusing them of manipulating TRP due to this some channels had to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
