What is the full form of BBC?
BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation and is one of the largest television networks around the globe with its headquarters in London, Broadcasting House. It has its offices in many countries and broadcasts news in several local languages too. It monopolized the television in Great Britain till 1954, and the radio till 1972.
History of BBC
- George Villiers and John Reith in October 1922, founded BBC.
- Marconi’s studio broadcasted its first daily broadcast in London on 14 November 1922.
- Received the Royal Charter in 1927 and changed its name to British Broadcasting Corporation from British Broadcasting Company.
- Launched its television service at Alexandra Palace, London in November 1936.
- Warned, educated, and entertained the tv audience and fans on the radio during World War 2.
- Broadcasted the crowning ceremony of the Queen in 1953 which was viewed by about 22 million people and increased tv sales.
- Opened its first tv center in West London in June 1960, which later went on to become BBC’s headquarters.
- Presented BBC online (bbc.co.uk) in 1997.
- BBC started to broaden its online services worldwide as the BBC trust became BBC’s main controlling body due to a ten-year-old charter signed with the British government in 2007.
