There are two full forms of BPL.
What is the full form of BPL?
The first full form of BPL is the Below Poverty Line, an economic standard set by the GoI to identify the lower-income people of the community who are in urgent need of assistance from the government. Individuals whose earnings fall below a certain set line of income come under BPL. This line of income is set by the government.
History of BPL
- In 1962 the planning commission proposed that a minimum amount of expenditure of Rs 20 per person in rural communities and Rs. 25 per person in urban areas is necessary to live (with the exception of schooling and healthcare as they are provided by the state government).
- Further in the 1970s, this criterion received modifications, and the new lower BPL level became Rs. 49.1 and Rs. 56.7 respectively.
- In 1993, a group of experts separately specified the poverty line for each state.
- Further in 2012, the rate of the poverty line in rural India reached Rs. 972, and Rs. 1,407 in urban India.
