What is the Full form of AML?

AML stands for Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a form of blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow. This disease affects the myeloid cells (immature blood cells), the precursors to other blood cells. This triggers the mutation of leukemic blasts in myeloid cells and impairs the development of normal cells leading to the deficiency of RBC, WBC, and platelets in the body.

Also known as acute nonlymphocytic leukemia or acute myelogenous leukemia or acute myeloblastic leukemia, AML has multiple forms whose formation depends on the type of leukemia cells present in the bone marrow blood. AML occurs due to adverse modifications or mutations in myeloid cell DNA genes.

1. Swollen lymph nodes

2. Bone pain

3. Frequent infections

4. Blood in urine

5. nosebleeds

6. Pale skin

7. Fever

8. Shortness of breath

9. Bleeding gums

Factors of Risk

1. Mostly common in ages 65 years or older.

2. More common in men.

3. Survivors of nuclear reactor accidents.

4. Cigarette smokers

5. Blood disorders like myelodysplasia and myelofibrosis increase the risk of AML.

6. Genetic conditions like Down syndrome.

7. Exposure to certain chemicals like benzene.
