What is the Full form of SIT?
SIT stands for Special Investigation Team, a special committee appointed to investigate a case when the existing investigative agency did not conduct the investigation appropriately.
Usually, SIT deals with high-profile cases. In order to take up a case, SIT first needs to submit the case report to the Court of the first instance. Then it is up to the board of the Court, whether to fully accept or reject the document. Some of the examples of cases accepted by the SIT include the Gujarat riot and the case of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot.
Important points regarding SIT
- The members of the SIT are Indian law enforcement officers, trained and qualified to investigate important crime incidents.
- SIT takes over an investigation when the hired investigative agency is incapable of conducting a fair investigation or if the case is against a high-profile individual who may impact the investigation.
- The court can also hire a unit of SIT if it thinks that the investigation of a case is not going the way it should for different reasons like compromise, bias, lack of resources, corruption, ted-tape, etc.
How does SIT work?
- India’s Supreme Court or the government of any state has the right to appoint the SIT.
- It is responsible for investigating the case and making a report of the case for court attendance.
- The report is scrutinized by all levels of appeal.
- It depends on the Court whether to approve or deny the report.
- In case of dismissal or unapproval of the recommendation, the appeals jury has the right to rule the future of the case.
