PCO stands for the Public Call Office. In India and Pakistan, a public call office (PCO) is a telephone facility placed in a public area. In the UK, it’s also referred to as a public telephone box (postal addresses for these kiosks sometimes include “PCO”).
History of PCO
There are coin-operated payphones as well as staffed payphones in India. The largest PCO installation in India is at BSNL, a government-owned company. Introducing the concept of PCOs to India was done by a Department of Telecom officer by the name of Mr. R L Dube. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, India has around 4.2 million (42 lakh) PCOs active by the end of 2006. (TRAI).
Private sector operators like Reliance Infocomm, Tata Indicom, Hutch, Idea, and Airtel mostly supply prepaid PCOs and have a moderate number of PCOs in the public environment.
PCOs, come in two major forms: wired and wireless. Both CDMA and GSM are used by wireless PCOs. Prepaid PCO connections are available from Reliance and Tata Indicom through CDMA. Prepaid PCO connections are available from Airtel, Idea, and Hutch through GSM.
Initially, fixed landline postpaid PCO connections were offered by the Department of Telecom, followed by BSNL, MTNL, and Airtel. Prepaid PCOs are also offered by BSNL and MTNL.

The Bhopal Unit of India’s largest public-sector telecom provider, BSNL, has opened India’s first optical fiber Internet café. A public Internet café on fiber was inaugurated on August 18 in Bhopal’s Neelbad locality by BSNL’s MP Unit General Manager Mr. N. K. Yadav and Bhopal Unit General Manager Mr. Mahesh Shukla, who had previously run an internet café using a broadband connection provided by copper lines in Mr. Deepak Verma’s shop.
