Full Form of PCO – Public Call Office

PCO stands for the Public Call Office. In India and Pakistan, a public call office (PCO) is a telephone facility placed in a public area. In the UK, it’s also referred to as a public telephone box (postal addresses for these kiosks sometimes include “PCO”).

History of PCO

There are coin-operated payphones as well as staffed payphones in India. The largest PCO installation in India is at BSNL, a government-owned company. Introducing the concept of PCOs to India was done by a Department of Telecom officer by the name of Mr. R L Dube. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, India has around 4.2 million (42 lakh) PCOs active by the end of 2006. (TRAI).

Private sector operators like Reliance Infocomm, Tata Indicom, Hutch, Idea, and Airtel mostly supply prepaid PCOs and have a moderate number of PCOs in the public environment.

PCOs, come in two major forms: wired and wireless. Both CDMA and GSM are used by wireless PCOs. Prepaid PCO connections are available from Reliance and Tata Indicom through CDMA. Prepaid PCO connections are available from Airtel, Idea, and Hutch through GSM. 

Initially, fixed landline postpaid PCO connections were offered by the Department of Telecom, followed by BSNL, MTNL, and Airtel. Prepaid PCOs are also offered by BSNL and MTNL.

The Bhopal Unit of India’s largest public-sector telecom provider, BSNL, has opened India’s first optical fiber Internet café. A public Internet café on fiber was inaugurated on August 18 in Bhopal’s Neelbad locality by BSNL’s MP Unit General Manager Mr. N. K. Yadav and Bhopal Unit General Manager Mr. Mahesh Shukla, who had previously run an internet café using a broadband connection provided by copper lines in Mr. Deepak Verma’s shop.

Description of PCO

A public call office telephone meter is being offered by a 1974-established Indian research center. For ease of use, it has a menu-driven operating system and a printer with an alphanumeric keypad and 24-column layout.

• Voltage resistance is good across the whole 100V to 260V range. the SMPS (internal system for measuring power supply)
• There are sixteen provisions for entering internal codes specific to a certain location.
• Keyboard shortcuts for controlling printers and phones, making console calls, and printing last-call information.
• On the console, there’s a backlit control panel.
• Take a printout of all the memory calls.
• There is a 99-account credit facility.
• called “Station Name” in printed materials and on signs.
• Possibility of customizing the colour of the printer ribbon.

Usage of PCO

It allows you to communicate with relatives who live out of town or abroad. It is simple, convenient, and less expensive. To protect the users’ privacy, they have special cabins for calling.

There are several PCO booths in India that let you make a call by inputting a one rupee coin. BSNL is one of the largest PCO service providers. However, several private telecom providers, including Reliance, Tata, Idea, Vodafone, and Airtel, are now joining this area.

PCO’s Applications: Phone call offices are common in rural regions because of telecommunications.
