Full Form of CIA – Central Intelligence Agency

The Central Intelligence Agency (Full form of CIA), also known as the Agency or the Company, is the federal government’s civilian foreign intelligence service responsible for gathering, processing, and analyzing national security information from around the world, primarily through human intelligence (HUMINT). A key part of US intelligence, the CIA is accountable to the Director of National Intelligence and primarily focuses on providing intelligence to the President and Cabinet of the United States.

History of CIA

Instead of focusing on domestic security like the FBI, the CIA’s primary mission is gathering foreign intelligence, with some limited efforts made in the United States as well. Human intelligence (HUMINT) activities are coordinated by the CIA, which acts as the nation’s chief intelligence agency. It’s the only government agency with legal authority to carry out and monitor covert operations ordered by the President. It uses tactical divisions like the Special Activities Center to influence foreign policy.

Many U.S. allies had their national intelligence services established by the CIA, such as Germany’s BND. It has also supported numerous foreign political organizations and governments, including planning, coordinating, training in torture, and providing technical assistance. The CIA has also got itself involved in several regime changes. Not just this, it has handled several terrorist attacks and infamous assassinations of foreign leaders.

CIA’s Role

The CIA’s role has grown increasingly broad in recent years, encompassing both overt and covert paramilitary activities. The Information Operations Center (IOC), one of the organization’s largest divisions, has shifted its focus from counterterrorism to offensive cyber operations.

Many controversies have surrounded the agency, including allegations of human rights abuses, domestic spying and propaganda, and drug trafficking. It’s also been used in fiction, such as in novels, films, and computer games.

Aim of CIA

The CIA was established with the goal of serving as a clearinghouse for foreign policy intelligence and analysis. Foreign intelligence and covert operations are now the organization’s primary goals.

The CIA’s fiscal 2013 budget lists the following five goals:

• The fight against terrorism must be the top priority.
• Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and other high-capacity weapons of mass destruction.
• Notifying/warning U.S. leaders of significant events taking place in other countries.
• Counterintelligence.
• Cyber intelligence is the study of computers and the Internet.

How do the CIA train?

In 1950, the CIA opened its first training facility, the Office of Training and Education. The CIA’s training budget was drastically reduced after the Cold War, which had a negative impact on employee morale. Director of Central Intelligence George Tenet set up CIA University in 2002 in response.

Every year, the CIA University offers 200 to 300 courses, training both new hires and seasoned intelligence officers, as well as CIA support staff. A component of the National Intelligence University, the Sherman Kent School for Intelligence Analysis is housed at the facility. It works in partnership with the Directorate of Analysis.
