The standalone mode in HBase
The default mode of HBase is Standalone mode. Basically, HBase does not use HDFS — it uses the local filesystem instead, in standalone mode. Moreover, it runs all HBase daemons and a local ZooKeeper all up in the same JVM in this mode. Also, Zookeeper binds to a well-known port here, hence, clients may talk to HBase.
