Situated in Higashi Hiroshima and Hiroshima, Japan, is Hiroshima University, a national institution of Japan. It was founded in 1929 and granted university status in 1949 after several national educational institutes came together.
The past of Hiroshima University
Hiroshima University was established on May 31, 1949, by the National School Establishment Law. Following World War II, all of Japan’s higher education institutions operating under the pre-war system were reorganized, and the country’s educational system completely changed. Under the new structure, Hiroshima University became a national university by merging the pre-war higher education institutions in Hiroshima Prefecture. Generally speaking, one national university was founded in each prefecture.

According to THE Japan University Rankings 2023, HU is ranked 11th overall and first in Chugoku and Shikoku. The Rankings were published by the British higher education publication Times Higher Education (THE) on March 24. Hiroshima University (HU) came in at number ten among national universities and eleventh overall.
Financial Aid
The Department of Integrated Global Studies (IGS) provides partial funding options to international students enrolled in the IGS bachelor’s program to support their academic success.
Students who do not hold Japanese nationality and who will be entering Japan with a valid “Ryugaku” student visa are eligible for these scholarship programs. International students currently residing or studying in Japan are not eligible for several scholarships.
