SMPS full form is Switched Mode Power Supply or Switching Mode Power Supply. It is an electronic power supply system that transfers electrical power effectively by using a switching regulator. It is a power supply unit (PSU) that helps change the voltage of a computer to the appropriate range.
SMPS switches the basics of lossless storage (capacitors and inductors) in order to adjust the output voltage and current between different electrical configurations. When we control transistors outside their active state they show no resistance when ‘on’ and carry no current when ‘off.’ This is known as the concept of Ideal switching and switches with an ideal function operate with 100 percent output.
Thus, there is no power wastage in the form of dissipated heating instead all input energy is given to the load. Such ideal systems are just a theory and don’t really exist in reality. This is why a switching power source isn’t 100 percent proficient, but there is still vital improvement in the effectiveness as compared to a linear regulator.
Working principles of SMPS
