What is the full form of RTO?
RTO stands for Regional Transport Office or Road Transport Office, an organization of the Indian Government that maintains a database of all the automobiles and licensed drivers for various Indian states. Every state has its own RTO that issues driving licenses and vehicle registration documents. Nowadays most jurisdictions have digitized cards the size of a PAN card, that contains a picture of the holder and vehicle information.
Responsibility Of RTO
RTO deals with driving licenses, road fund licensing, and road tax. It organizes excise duty collection for vehicles and sells custom registration. Following are some important roles RTO performs:
1. New vehicle registration.
2. Maintaining the record of registered automobiles.
3. Issuing the driving license of an automobile driver or owner.
4. Inspecting automobiles routinely.
5. Issuing documents to assert automobile fitness.
6. Collecting the once-in-a-lifetime road tax from automobile owners.
7. Managing licenses that were given to autos, trucks, taxis, etc.
8. Implementing new rules and regulations concerning automobiles.
9. Checks the emission levels and issues pollution documents for automobiles.
