What is the full form of CID?

CID stands for Crime Investigation Department, an investigation subdivision crime branch of Indian State Police. Led by the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), CID has its headquarters in Pune and handles cases handed over by the Indian government and DGP. In 1902, the British government developed CID to maintain law and order in society. The officers of this department operate in regular clothes and are known as CID or Detectives.

CID was split into Crime branch CID and CID in 1929 where Crime branch CID is a special department headed by the ADGP and guided by the Inspector-General of Police. It analyzes serious offenses like murder, forgery, riot, counterfeiting, and cases handed over by the High Court or state government.

Working of CID

1. Investigates criminal cases like murder, rape, robbery, theft, etc.
2. Gathers evidence and facts for fraud and criminal cases to catch the criminals and present the suspect(s) to the Court with evidence.
3. Investigates cases with the help of the regional police.
4. Exchanges information and works in coordination with other agencies.
