What is the full form of BMD?
BMD stands for Bone Mineral Density. This can lead to an X-ray test that helps determine the density of one’s bone. This tells how many grams per unit volume of one’s bone is packaged with calcium and other minerals and helps determine the strength and health of one’s bones. People usually perform this test when they are at risk of mild and severe bone loss.
Method of performing BMD
A non-invasive painless procedure that requires no prescription. During this test, the patient lies on a table or bench and the doctor exposes him/her to low radiation. There are two kinds of scans for bone density:
Central DXA: X-ray scanning of bones of the torso’s hip, spine, or other bones.
Peripheral DXA: X-ray scanning of bones of forearm, finger, wrist, or heel.
Why is the BMD examination carried out?
The BMD test helps:
- Identify bone density loss before a bone fracture.
- Identify osteoporosis.
- Control osteoporosis treatment.
Need of BMD test
It is a preventive bone density clinical diagnosis done by a doctor:
- When an X-ray shows a bone loss in the spine.
- When a patient suffers back pain probably due to fracture or bone loss.
- If height decreases by half-inch or more in a year.
- Reduction in bone density due to long-term steroid use.
- Organ or bone marrow transplant can influence the bone-rebuilding process due to anti-rejection drugs.
- Women who go through the postmenopausal period at 50 years or more.
- Women above the age of 65.
