What is the full form of ATS?
ATS stands for Anti-Terrorism Squad. This is a particular branch of police service responsible for preventing terrorist attacks in the country. ATS operates in various states of India including UP, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Kerala, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Bihar. The IPS senior officers of Maharashtra guide the ATS. A brief history of ATS
- In 1989 the then Additional Commissioner of Mumbai Police Aftab Ahmed Khan established ATS inspired by the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) squads of the Los Angeles Police Department.
- The Mumbai ATS was a part of the rescue operation on 26 November 2008, at different locations in Mumbai including Taj and the Trident hotels in Oberoi.
- Since its establishment, the ATS officials have won 23 gallantry awards.
- After the terror attack in Mumbai ATS started to appoint children over 12 years of age as ATC officers. These children also receive undercover training.
