AM stands for Ante-Meridiem, a Latin term that indicates a 12-hour clock system before Noon. It is a unit of the time standard that signifies the time before midday The 12-hour system divides a day into two parts where AM represents the first period from midnight to noontime.
PM stands for Post Meridiem and denotes the post-midday period. Another unit of convention time, it too is associated with the 12-hour clock and reflects the second period of time from Noon till midnight.
Example
It is confusing if someone just says that they shall be arriving at 10 o’clock because one cannot distinguish whether it is in the morning or evening. AM and PM help prevent this ambiguity in the 12-hour clock system. Accordingly, morning is 10 am and evening is 10 pm.
