It is a commonly known explosive substance with smooth handling characteristics. It is effective because it can turn from solid to hot expanding gases very rapidly. 2 Moles of solid can transform nearly into 15 moles of hot gas with some carbon powder to bring out the explosion characteristics.<\/p>\n<h3>Properties of TNT<\/h3>\n<p>Following are the important properties of TNT:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chemical formula:<\/strong> C6H2(NO2)3CH3<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other names:<\/strong> 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, 2,4,6-Trinitromethylbenzene, 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluol.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Molar mass:<\/strong> 227.132 g\u00b7mol\u22121<\/li>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> Solid pale yellow colored<\/li>\n<li><strong>Melting and boiling point:<\/strong> 80.35 \u00b0C and 240.0 \u00b0C<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>A brief history of TNT<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Julius Wilbrand a German chemist invented TNT in 1863. Used as a yellow dye for years.<\/li>\n<li>In 1891, Carl Haussermann another German chemist identified its explosive function.<\/li>\n<li>The German army in 1902, introduced it as a filling for artillery shells.<\/li>\n<li>The British Army substituted lyddite in lyddite-filed shells, with TNT in 1907.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Synthesizing method of TNT<\/h3>\n<p>There are three steps in the synthesis of TNT:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1st step:<\/strong> Nitration process in the presence of nitric and sulphuric acid helps in the formation of MNT (mononitrotoluene).<\/li>\n<li><strong>2nd step:<\/strong> Production of DNT (dinitrotoluene) using nitration process after separation of DNT is done.<\/li>\n<li><strong>3rd step:<\/strong> Nitration process used in the formation of TNT from DNT in the presence of oleum and anhydrous nitric acid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Use of TNT<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Used for explosive purposes in the industry and military sector.<\/li>\n<li>Suitable for demolitions.<\/li>\n<li>Can also generate charge transfer salt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the Full form of TNT?
