Army, Navy, and Air Force officer cadets at the National Defence Academy (NDA) are the first in the world to receive joint training. Conceptually, NDA dates back to the pre-independence era, but it was born out of World War II lessons learned.<\/p>\n
World War II taught us that to be effective in war, the three Services needed to be fully integrated and functional as a single strike force. Although Lord Mountbatten and Field Marshal Auchinleck had proposed the idea, India’s forward-looking and visionary political leadership of the time backed the establishment of a tri-service training facility wholeheartedly.<\/p>\n
After the Indian government appointed a high-powered committee to prepare plans for a military academy, which would incorporate best practices from around the world in order to train future Army, Navy, and Air Force officers together, in May 1945, a military academy was established.<\/p>\n
It was renamed the Armed Forces Academy based on the 1946 report of this committee and split into two wings, the \u201cInter-Services Wing\u201d and the \u201cMilitary Wing\u201d. The Inter-Services Wing was later renamed the Joint Services Wing. In January 1949, combined training for the three Services began at the Inter-Services Wing. The National Defence Academy was subsequently relocated from Dehradun to Khadakwasla and renamed.<\/p>\n
Inter-Services Wing moved to Khadakwasla in 1947 after extensive country-wide reconnaissance to find a site that would provide enough space and potential for training facilities for all three Services. The location had previously served as a combined warfare school for allies and was therefore suitable.<\/p>\n
In 1949, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for the NDA in Khadakwasla, and Major General E Habibullah, the institution’s Commandant, was able to complete the herculean task of moving it from Dehradun to Khadakwasla. Morarji Desai, then Chief Minister of Bombay, inaugurated the NDA on January 16, 1955, with a formal ceremony. On June 5, 1955, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru attended the first passing out parade at NDA Khadakwasla.<\/p>\n
In January 2009, the NDA in its various forms celebrated 60 years of service to the nation. To date, this institution has produced over 34,300 officers for the Indian Armed Forces as well as more than 880 officers for friendly countries.<\/p>\n
Most importantly, they have been exposed to a unique inter-services environment where they have received academic and military training of the highest caliber. As a result of their gallantry and distinguished service, NDA’s alumni have received the nation’s highest honors, both during peacetime and in wartime.<\/p>\n
Cadets in the National Defence Academy (NDA) receive intensive training in science and military technology, arts, and military subjects in addition to military training. Graduation from Jawaharlal Nehru University is the culmination of their training.<\/p>\n
To prepare for future battles with advanced weaponry, cadets must also undergo a rigorous physical conditioning regimen including calisthenics, drills in the pool or on the horse as well as other sporting activities to develop their physical strength and mental toughness. In the meantime, he is exposed to a wide range of cultural activities and hobbies.<\/p>\n
Therefore, to conclude that \u201cSeva Parmo Dharma\u201d, or \u201cService Before Self\u201d, will remain the Academy’s motto as Indian youth continue to graduate from its hallowed halls.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
