Layer 2 switches forward packets based on the MAC address. Switching modes refer to the various modes utilised to forward packets.<\/p>\n<p>Different portions of a frame are recognized in switching mode. The frame is made up of many components, including a preamble, the destination MAC address, the source MAC address, the user&#8217;s data, and the Frame Check Sequence (FCS).<\/p>\n<h3>Types of Switching Modes:<\/h3>\n<h4>1. When the full frame is received, the switch stores it in the switch buffer memory. This is referred to as storing the frame.<\/p>\n<p>After the frame has been saved, it is verified for errors. If an error is detected, the message is discarded; otherwise, it is sent to the next node. This is referred to as advancing the frame.<\/p>\n<p>The CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) technique is used to check for mistakes in the received frame by using a number of bits.<\/p>\n<p>The store-and-forward approach provides a high level of security since the corrupted frames do not affect the target network.<\/p>\n<p>Store-and-forward switches are extremely reliable since they do not forward colliding frames.<\/p>\n<h4>2. Cut-through switching mode:<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/data-flair.training\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Cut-through.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-100780\" src=\"https:\/\/data-flair.training\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Cut-through.jpg\" alt=\"Cut-through switching mode\" width=\"998\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/data-flair.training\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Cut-through.jpg 998w, https:\/\/data-flair.training\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Cut-through-768x234.jpg 768w, https:\/\/data-flair.training\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Cut-through-720x219.jpg 720w, https:\/\/data-flair.training\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Cut-through-520x158.jpg 520w, https:\/\/data-flair.training\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Cut-through-320x97.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 998px) 100vw, 998px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cut-through switching is a technique in which the switch transmits packets after identifying the target address rather than waiting for the complete frame to be received.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever a frame is received, the switch immediately checks the first 6 bytes after the preamble, and then checks the destination in the switching table to identify the outgoing interface port and then passes the frame to the destination.<\/p>\n<p>Because the switch does not wait for the whole frame to be received before delivering packets to the destination, it has a low latency rate.<\/p>\n<p>It lacks an error-checking method. As a result, the mistakes might be delivered to the receiver with or without errors.<\/p>\n<p>Cut-through switching has a short wait time since it forwards packets as soon as it recognises the target MAC address.<\/p>\n<p>Collision detection is not used in this approach, thus frames that have collided will be transmitted as well.<\/p>\n<h4>3. Fragment-free switching mode:<\/h4>\n<p>Fragment-free switching is a more sophisticated Cut-through Switching method.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure error-free transmission, fragment-free switching reads at least 64 bytes of a frame before forwarding to the next node.<br \/>\nIt combines the speed of Cut-through Switching with the functionality of error checking.<\/p>\n<p>This method examines the 64 bytes of the ethernet frame that include addressing information.<\/p>\n<p>When a collision is discovered inside the first 64 bytes of a frame, the frames that are collided are not sent any further.<\/p>\n<h3>Difference between Store-and-forward switching and Cut-through switching:<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Store-and-forward<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>Cut-through<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store-and-forward Switching is a method that waits until the full frame is received before proceeding.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cut-through Switching is a method that examines the first 6 bytes after the preamble to determine the destination address.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has error-checking capabilities. If an error is detected in the frame, it will be rejected; otherwise, it will be sent to the next node.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes no attempt to detect errors. The frame will be sent with or without faults.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a high latency rate because it waits for the whole frame to be received before passing it on to the next node.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a low latency rate since it simply examines the first six bytes of the packet to find the destination address.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is extremely dependable since it only sends error-free packets.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is less reliable than the Store-and-forward approach since it also sends error-prone packets.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a long wait time since it waits for the whole frame to be received before proceeding.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because cut-through switches do not save the entire frame or packet, it has a short wait time.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Summary:<\/h3>\n<p>In this article, we looked at the concept of switching modes, and we also looked at the three main modes of switching, which are: Store-and-forward, cut-through, and fragment-free.
