Unable to create a directory in VM.

  I am unable to create a directory in Ubuntu VM. The details are,
  
  Command run: hdfs dfs -mkdir /input
  Error Received: mkdir: Call From ubuntu/127.0.1.1 to localhost:9000 failed on connection exception: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused; For more details see: http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/ConnectionRefused
  hdadmin@ubuntu:~$
  
  Anyone help me to resolve this.
